Past Perfect Tense

Definition: it describes an action that happened before another action in the past.

Example: She had taken a cup of tea before I ordered for her.

Helping Verbs: Had

Sentence structure

  • Positive = Subject + Had + Verb 3rd form + Object
  • Negative = Subject + Hadn’t + Verb 3rd form + Object
  • Interrogative = Had + Subject + Verb 3rd form + Object?
  • Negative Interrogative = Hadn’t + Subject + Verb 3rd form + Object?

Positive Sentences

  • She had fixed her house’s electronic issues before I called the electrician.
  • He had done his English homework before the teacher arrived.

Negative Sentences

  • The Mechanic hadn’t fixed his car.
  • I hadn’t traveled yesterday.

Interrogative Sentences

  • Had workmen worked all night last night?

  • Why had the Plumber fixed her kitchen sink before my orders?
