Definition: it describes ongoing actions in the past.

Example: Julia was going to London last year.

Helping verbs: Was/Were

Sentence structure

  • Positive = Subject + Was/Were + Verb 1nd form +ing Object
  • Negative = Subject +Was not/Weren’t + Verb 1st form +ing Object
  • Interrogative = Was/Were + Subject + Verb 1st form +ing Object?
  • Negative Interrogative = Wasn’t/Weren’t + Subject + Verb 1st form +ing Object?

Positive Sentences

  • Electricians were fixing her house’s electronic issues.
  • He was studying English all night.

Negative Sentences

  • The Mechanic wasn’t happy to repair his car.
  • I wasn’t going to travel yesterday.

Interrogative Sentences (yes or no answer)

  • Were workmen working all night?

Interrogative Sentences with (questions word)

  • Why was Plumber fixing her kitchen sink?

Negative Interrogative Sentences

  • Weren’t they dancing at the party last night?
